2018 Arizona State Championship Seedings

For the 2018 season, the league has adopted a two division format. By a vote of the league's board, the championship for Division I will consist of an 8 team single elimination bracket, while Division II will include 6 teams in a single elimination bracket.

Format

For the sake of this document, a “higher seed” is the team whose position is considered better than another.  So, the best team is the #1 seed and is considered the “highest” seed.

Division I

  • Eight teams will make the playoffs in a standard elimination bracket where #8 plays #1, #7 plays #2, etc..

  • The quarterfinals and semifinals will be hosted by the higher seeds.   The finals is at a neutral site.

  • The quarterfinals will be scheduled Tuesday, April 24th if possible, Wednesday, April 25th if necessary.

  • The semifinals will be scheduled for Friday, April 27th or Saturday, April 28th.  If travel between Phoenix and Tucson is required, the game should be played on Saturday if at all possible.

  • The finals will be played Friday, May 4th at Corona HS.

Division II

  • 6 teams will make the playoffs in a standard elimination bracket where#1 and #2 get a bye and #6 plays #3 and #5 plays #4.

  • The quarter-finals and semifinals will be hosted by the higher seeds.  Teams are encouraged to arrange a doubleheader with the other home team to encourage fans and accommodate officials.

  • The quarterfinals will be scheduled Tuesday, April 24th if possible, Wednesday, April 25th if necessary.

  • The semifinals will be scheduled for Saturday, April 28th or Monday, April 30th.  If travel between Phoenix and Tucson is required, the game should be played on Saturday if at all possible.

  • The finals will be played Friday, May 4th at Corona HS.

Determination of Seeds

Division I

In Division I, all teams will have played each other exactly once.

Teams will be ranked by overall winning percentage against other ALL Division I teams.  Games against Division II teams and and any non-conference or out-of-state opponents have no bearing on the playoff seeding.

In the case of two or more tied teams, the following criteria will be used:

  1. Head-to-head record between tied teams

  2. Total wins by defeated teams

  3. Goal differential against tied teams

  4. Most recent victory against tied teams

  5. Coin Toss

When a tie involves more than two teams and one criterion differentiates one or more subsets of the tied teams, the tie-breaker procedure will begin again from the beginning with the new subset(s).

For example, assume:

  • Teams A, B, C and D have the same overall record and are tied for 5th place.

  • Teams A and B have a 2-1 head-to-head record against the tied teams.

  • Teams C and D have a 1-2 head-to-head record against the tied teams.

In the above case:

  • Teams A and B will begin a new tie-breaker to determine 5th and 6th place beginning with the first criterion.

  • Teams C and D will begin a new tie-breaker to determine 7th and 8th place beginning with the first criterion.

  • Teams C and D cannot finish with a higher seed than Teams A and B.

Division II

The Division II seeds will be determined by a concensus of the Div 2 coaches.

  1. Everyone has agreed that the winner on each Region gets a play off spot, followed by the next 3 best league records.
  2. We have also agreed if 2 Teams are tied for the 6th spot then head to head decides the placement. However if they haven’t played then they will settle it on the field.
  3. It was also agreed that we will try and decide as many issues on the field as possible and that we will wait to see how everything turns out and deal with any situations when they arise. Trying to be prepared for all situations that can arise is very difficult and creates problems when a scenario is not previously though about. So we will use head to head, then league parameters and then settle issues on the field as our template. Except for 6th spot ties between 2 Teams that have not played a league game.
  4. Play-offs will consist of 6 Teams. The 1st and 2nd best records will get a bye, while the other 4 Teams will play the first round. Highest seen will be home Team.
